Please note that Oh Sew Brixton is taking a break from mid May until the autumn, which is why the courses are looking a little sparse at the moment! We hope to be back in October and will keep the website live.
Beginners Dressmaking (6 evening or morning sessions or 3 day intensive)
This class introduces beginners to the basics of making your own clothes using a shop bought pattern. You need to be able to thread a machine and sew (reasonably!) straight but rusty is fine.
The course will cover:
· taking body measurements
· understanding and choosing a pattern
· different types of fabrics, choosing a fabric
· cutting, marking, pressing, and using tools and notions
· basic construction techniques
Students will make either a simple top or dress. We have some patterns available or bring your own (very easy only!) We welcome students of all shapes and sizes.
Sewing machines & sewing equipment are provided. You are welcome to bring your own machine, but please make sure it is in good working order - we are not mechanics, alas!
Easy 50s Dress (3 evening sessions)
In this class we will use Vogue 8184 to make a simple boned 50's style d
re
ss with either a fitted or flared skirt.
A lot of the more straightforward stuff will be done at home, so you must have made at least one garment before, and own or have access to a sewing machine.
Dates: Thu evenings 6:30-9pm for 3 weeks starting 26 Apr
Cost: £105 excluding materials & pattern
Jersey Wrap Dress (3 evening sessions)
Take your first steps with stretch fabrics under supervision! In this class we will sew a jersey wrap dress on a domestic machine using Vogue 8379. There's no zip, fitting should be fairly straightforward and so we hope to get this finished in four sessions with a bit of homework.
You must have made at least one garment before and own or have access to a sewing machine as you will need to do some work in between classes.
Trousers that Fit (2 x Sunday sessions)
That well fitting pair of trousers you have always dreamed of!
Students will take their body measurements and input them into our pattern making software. The pattern will be printed, cut out in calico & sewn up. Then final adjustments will be made, before making up a simple pair of trousers in fabric of your choice. We will also show you how to change your basic pattern to make different styles of trousers.
This is not a beginners workshop, students must be comfortable using a sewing machine.
Corset Making (6 evening sessions)
This 6 week course is aimed at those who would like to make a late Victorian style corset for themselves. The corset is fully boned with metal spiral boning and made from a heavyweight cotton fabric but can be covered with a fashion fabric of your choice and decorated to your taste. You will have a choice of two corsets lengths, the choice of making the corset lined or unlined and the choice of with or without fashion fabric.
You must be a confident sewer and have access to a machine to do some homework.
